In the summer of 1739 Francesco Algarotti (1712–1764) sailed with Lord Baltimore from London to St Petersburg for the wedding of Anna Leopoldovna. His letters to Lord Hervey describe the voyage through the Sund, Reval and Kronstadt, Peter the Great’s new city – “this great window, newly opened in the North, through which Russia looks into Europe” – the army, the fleet, trade and finances, the war against the Turks and the Tatars of the Crimea, and the return by Danzig and Hamburg. With the dedicatory letters to Count Voroncov, the Saggio di storia metallica della Russia and four letters to Scipione Maffei on the Caspian Sea (1750–51). Italian text of the Opere, Livorno 1764, newly transcribed from the scan, with 108 notes and a glossary in Italian by Bernhard Trebuch. Reading sample: the dedicatory letters, the Saggio and the first two letters.
