Uffenbachs Reisen I
J. F. A. von Uffenbach
In October 1714 the young Frankfurt patrician Johann Friedrich Armand von Uffenbach (1687–1769), later mayor of Frankfurt, set out from Colmar on the second part of his Grand Tour and kept a diary of everything he saw: libraries, collections, churches, scholars, inns, roads and ruins. Volume I: from Colmar through Basel, Zürich, Bern and Geneva, across the Mont Cenis to Turin and Milan, on through Parma, Mantua, Verona and Vicenza to Padua, Venice and Bologna (October 1714 – March 1715); with the editor’s reading edition “Venedig und weiter” (2021/2025). Edited from the typescript of the Göttingen manuscripts in modern German spelling by Bernhard Trebuch, with notes, Wikipedia links and page-precise links to the books Uffenbach cites. Reading sample: Uffenbach’s note to the reader and the journey from Colmar to Schaffhausen.
