Chevalier John Taylor
The Chevalier John Taylor (1703–1772), oculist to popes, kings and emperors, was the most famous and most notorious eye surgeon of the eighteenth century; he operated on Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. His memoirs (London, 1761–1762) tell of his journeys through every court of Europe, of nuns, friars, ministers, impostors and persons of high life, with the patents of the crowned heads in his favour. All three volumes, newly transcribed from the first edition, revised and annotated by Bernhard Trebuch, with 175 notes. Reading sample: the dedication, the preface and the Address to my Readers.
