Ovid’s Metamorphoses
Ovid · Garth, Dryden, Addison, Pope
In 1717 Jacob Tonson published Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Fifteen Books, translated by the most eminent hands: Samuel Garth gathered the versions of John Dryden, Joseph Addison, John Gay, William Congreve, Nicholas Rowe, Alexander Pope and others into one splendid folio with a plate before every book. Newly transcribed from two copies of the first edition, with Garth’s dedication and preface, the sixteen plates, the notes and N.B. marks of the print, and a glossary of names and old words with links to Theoi, Wikipedia and the dictionaries of 1700 and 1728. Garth’s text is set in Fra Bernardo Tonson, a type made after Tonson’s own. Reading sample: dedication, preface and Book I, with the glossary.
